Gaming Energy Gummies vs Powder Tub Brands: What's Actually Different?
Summary
The core difference is format, not effectiveness. Gummies are ready to eat with no mixing. Gaming energy powder brands need a scoop, water and a shake before you get anything at all. Neither is inherently better. Powder wins on cost per serving and dose flexibility. Gummies win on prep time, portability and consistency. Which one you reach for probably says more about your setup than about which brand you trust.
I want to be upfront about something before I get into this. The big gaming energy powder brands didn't get big by accident. They built loyal communities, and a lot of gamers have used the same tub for years without a single complaint. We're not here to tell you that's wrong.
We're here to explain why the five of us wanted something different for ourselves, and why that led to Levelz existing at all.
The category, broken down
| Factor | Gummies | Typical powder tub |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Ready to eat | Mix-it-yourself |
| Price per serving | Higher | Lower |
| Sugar | Often 0g | Varies, sometimes significant |
| Caffeine source | Fixed dose per gummy | Variable, depends on scoop |
| Taste | Consistent, no water needed | Depends on mixing ratio |
| Mess | Minimal | Scooping and shaking involved |
| Prep time | None | 1 to 2 minutes |
The sugar row is the one that varies most between brands, and it's the one you can't generalise about. Some powder formulations are genuinely low or zero sugar. Others carry a meaningful amount. There's no way to know which you've got without turning the tub over and reading it, and that's true whichever format you're buying.
The caffeine row is more consistent. A scoop is a rough measure by design, so the dose you get depends on how you filled it. That's not a flaw exactly, since flexibility is part of the appeal, but it does mean two sessions on the same tub can feel different for no obvious reason.
What the powder brands do well
Worth saying plainly, because a comparison that only lists one side's advantages isn't a comparison.
Powder tubs are cheaper per serving, often significantly. If you're going through a serving or two a day, that difference compounds fast across a year.
Flavour range is the other big one. A powder brand can run twenty flavours because reformulating a drink mix is relatively straightforward. Gummy manufacturing is more involved, so most gummy brands run two or three flavours at most. If variety keeps you interested, powder has that covered in a way gummies currently don't.
Then there's dose flexibility. Half a scoop before a casual evening, a full one before something more demanding. You can't split a gummy sensibly, so that adjustment isn't available in the same way.
And they've had years to get the community side right. A lot of the loyalty around these brands is earned rather than bought.
Why we went a different way
All five of us grew up gaming, long before Levelz was ever an idea. We used the big powder tubs like everyone else.
But somewhere along the way, mixing up a shaker mid-session, or forgetting to bring one to a mate's house, started to feel like more hassle than it should be for something that's supposed to make gaming easier rather than add a chore to it.
The specific moment I remember is a LAN where I'd brought a tub and no shaker. Which meant a plastic cup, a spoon someone found in a kitchen drawer, and a drink with lumps in it. That's a stupid problem to have in 2026.
We wanted convenience without giving up on being health-conscious about it. No sugar crash, no mystery scoop sizes, no faffing about with water when you just want to get back into the game. That's the whole reason Levelz exists. Not because powder is bad, but because we wanted an option that didn't exist yet.
The verdict, by use case
If you want zero mess and zero prep, gummies are the clear winner. Open, eat, done.
If you want to control your dose down to the gram, or you're on a tight budget buying in bulk, a powder tub still makes a lot of sense, and the big brands have that use case covered well.
If you travel a lot for LANs or tournaments, gummies win on portability every time. No shaker, no spillage risk in a bag, and nothing to wash up in a hotel sink.
If you're gaming from a fixed home setup and don't mind the extra minute, powder works perfectly well, and probably always will for a big chunk of the gaming community.
If you're new to energy supplements entirely, gummies are the easier starting point purely because there's no measuring involved. Two gummies is two gummies. You can work out whether the dose suits you without a scoop introducing variables.
We're a newer entrant taking a different approach to a category that's long been dominated by big powder brands with years of community trust behind them. We're not claiming to have overtaken that. We're offering an alternative for people who want what we wanted.
FAQ
Are gummies as strong as powder tubs?
Yes, gram for gram of active ingredient. Levelz gummies carry 150mg of caffeine per serving, comparable to a standard scoop or energy drink.
Why do most big gaming energy brands use powder instead of gummies?
Cost and manufacturing simplicity, mainly. Powder is cheaper to produce at scale and has an established supply chain the bigger brands built over years. Gummies require more complex, precise manufacturing to get dosing consistent.
Is it cheaper to switch to gummies from powder?
Usually not on a pure cost-per-serving basis. You're paying a convenience premium with gummies. Whether that's worth it depends on how much you value not having to mix anything.
Can I use both, depending on the situation?
Plenty of people do. Powder at home, gummies for travel, LANs or anywhere without easy water access is a sensible split. Just track your total caffeine across both rather than treating them separately.
Do powder tubs contain more sugar than gummies?
It varies significantly by brand and flavour, but many powder formulations do carry more added sugar than a well-formulated 0g sugar gummy. Always check the specific product's label.
Do gummies have as many flavours as powder brands?
No, and that's a fair criticism of the format. Gummy manufacturing makes wide flavour ranges harder to run. We do two, Sour Tropical Fruit and Sour Mixed Berry, and we'd rather do two well than six badly.
In short
Format is the difference, not strength. Gaming energy powder brands offer lower cost per serving, more flavours and adjustable dosing. Gummies offer no prep, no mess, fixed dosing and something you can throw in a bag. Powder suits a fixed home setup on a budget. Gummies suit everything else. Plenty of people keep both.
